Unrigged: How Americans Are Battling Back to Save Democracy

David Daley, a senior fellow at FairVote and the former editor of Salon, follows his revelatory report of how Republicans have used redistricting for their own political ends, Ratf**ked, with a wide-ranging and deeply researched account of how Americans are reclaiming control of the democratic process. A frequent media commentator on voting rights, Daley recounts how a group in Pennsylvania used mathematical data to defeat a gerrymander, how a Michigan millennial launched a statewide redistricting revolution with a Facebook post, and looks at the work of the voting rights activists throughout the country who helped realize the blue wave that swept Florida, Maine, Utah, and other states in 2018.

Let the People Pick the President: The Case for Abolishing the Electoral College

The possibility of getting rid of the Electoral College has been broached in the past, but now, with two of the last five presidential elections won by candidates who lost the popular vote, the system is looking untenable. In this urgent and compelling call to action, Jesse Wegman, a member of The New York Times editorial board who writes editorials on the Supreme Court and legal affairs, addresses the concerns of both advocates and opponents of the electoral system. His detailed manifesto looks back to the College’s controversial origins, profiles past attempts to reform it, and shows how a national popular vote would reduce voter apathy, stem polarization, increase election turnout, and restore faith in democracy. He will be in conversation with Adam Liptak.

The Firsts: The Inside Story of the Women Reshaping Congress

Jennifer Steinhauer’s accomplished twenty-five year career at The New York Times includes stints as bureau chief of City Hall and Los Angeles, as well as winning the Newswoman's Club of New York Front Page Deadline Reporting Award for her reporting on Hurricane Katrina. Her new book looks at the 116th Congress through the lens of the record-setting number of new women representatives. Following figures including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Sharice Davids, Deb Haaland, Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, and Abigail Spanberger, Steinhauer considers the various political, generational, and gender challenges they face, including whether or how to work with their party’s leadership, how to transfer their campaign ideas into a lasting legislative framework, and how they can adjust to public life on the twenty-four-hour news cycle.

Susan Hennessey and Benjamin Wittes | Unmaking the Presidency

Known for their deeply informed and hard-hitting commentary, Hennessy and Wittes, executive editor and editor in chief of the Lawfare website, respectively, analyze Trump’s presidency from the wider context of the history of the office itself. Basing their arguments on the discrepancy between our traditional expectations of a chief executive and Trump’s performance in the first half of his term, the authors explore the origins of the normative view of the presidency, assess where Trump is following the model of predecessors and where he is behaving in radically new ways, and ask if the damage being inflicted on the office is reversible.

This event is free to attend with no reservation required. Seating is available on a first come, first served basis.
