The Firsts: The Inside Story of the Women Reshaping Congress

  • Politics & Prose 5105 Connecticut Avenue Northwest Washington, DC, 20008 United States (map)

Jennifer Steinhauer’s accomplished twenty-five year career at The New York Times includes stints as bureau chief of City Hall and Los Angeles, as well as winning the Newswoman's Club of New York Front Page Deadline Reporting Award for her reporting on Hurricane Katrina. Her new book looks at the 116th Congress through the lens of the record-setting number of new women representatives. Following figures including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Sharice Davids, Deb Haaland, Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, and Abigail Spanberger, Steinhauer considers the various political, generational, and gender challenges they face, including whether or how to work with their party’s leadership, how to transfer their campaign ideas into a lasting legislative framework, and how they can adjust to public life on the twenty-four-hour news cycle.
