The Red Carpet, so far

Jessica Chastain- gorgeousIs Ryan Seacrest about to blow a gasket because he's got Kim Jong-Il's "ashes" all over him? What is up with Kelly Osbourne's hair? I do not love Emma Stone's dress although I do love her. I would like to be friends with Maya Rudolph. Also Busy Phillips. And Lesley Mann. Rooney Mara's dress: MEH! Glenn Close looks fabulous. Is The Artist going to sweep the biggies? J.Lo- haate the sleeves Penelope- luv the dress! Gwyneth- love it! The interviewers should all be sued for being vacuous, irritating, nerds.

Gardening is great, pizza night for the Oscars

Sore in the best way, I am basking in hours just spent working hard in the garden. Those strawberry roots are insidious; their sweet, meek leaves belie the havoc they're wreaking just underneath the top layer of soil. Root systems like a manic kudzu or wisteria, I found I'd neglected them too long and really had to get in there with my pitchfork and trowel. I uprooted a bunch and replanted them in a self-contained pot. We'll see what sort of success they find there, and perhaps too, I'll be able to harvest the fruit before the critters on the ground. I'm impressed with the tenacity of the greens and herbs. No matter how deathly the parsley and chives look, back they come as soon as the days warm up enough. And the kales and radicchios must groove on a cold spell, because they are looking fine out there. I think I'll put this guy in our ravioli tomorrow. Are y'all Oscars watchers? I love the dresses most. The new format of who isn't nominated leaves something to be desired in my opinion, but then again, ever since Titanic was nominated for best picture, I've been on the outs with the MPA. I mean really, Titanic? Blech! Nonetheless, the pomp is a little bit wonderful, and we'll be tucking in to a fantastic pizza and some cocktails while nearly prostrate on the couch- a hell of a night ahead. Hats off to my mom's spirit as tonight will mark the 32th annual Oscars party she's hosted with, might I add, many of the same attendees. Go team! Mom often dons blue jean shorts, a tuxedo shirt and bow tie, passes out ballots, everyone votes, imbibes a'plenty, and she gives out prizes at the end. I love it.

Greens, glorious greens

The boys and I had a marvelous morning at the farmers market. It is an absolutely gorgeous day, and we whiled away at least an hour, perusing the stalls, sampling the fare and delightedly finding some new items. Between them went two beef empanadas (apparently they'll be making another appearance on Chris' facebook page), two raspberry-almond muffins, a large cup of hot apple cider, several rounds of goat cheese (we then bought a log per Oliver's request) and a solid number of apple and pear slices. We saw the very friends we had dinner with last night and also scored a StreetWise paper which Jack read from during the drive home. Oliver was dressed in full construction-worker regalia and Jack was suited up as a Western sheriff- boots, blazer, badge and a gun and holster hidden away on my orders. He kept asking, "May I remove?" Hilarious. It was quite an idyllic morning actually. While there I was thrilled to find chicken raised outside! in pastures! eating grass and insects! happy! I bought some. Then I saw that they also had happy pork (here's looking at you President of the Missouri Farm Bureau) and bought some of that too for future meatballs. While watching Ol chow on the fresh goat cheese, I looked around at another stall and saw bins of fresh baby greens: two kales and mustard. I bought a big bag and plan to make homemade ravioli tomorrow with a greens and goat cheese filling in a lemon sauce. AAAHH!
