More tomorrow, interesting tidbit

Have mercy! I feel like I was participating in some sort of stamina research today and am now totally pooped. Today feels like 4 days compressed into one. Most unfortunately, I will not get 4 nights of sleep tonight. Darn! Oliver tested negative for strep. You know how weird it is to hope your kid has the diagnosable thing? You just wanna know and be able to deal with it. The waiting and drawing out are tough, for everyone. He's such a cute, good-attitude patient though. He keeps insisting "I am well." Bless his heart. This as the snot runs and his cheeks are flushed with fever.

I won't, thus, have the morning free tomorrow as I thought I would but I nonetheless hope to test another cake, thaw my King salmon, make yet another run to the market and so forth. Will have more for you then.

Did you see today the news that fatherhood lowers male testosterone rates? The more involved in caretaking a father, the lower his testosterone longterm. Interesting!

Lemon cake from scratch on the horizon

I had the most wonderful exchange with a fellow food52er from Montana last night. She posted the recipe for a marvelous sounding chocolate cake, and I wanted to adapt it to a lemon one. She had great tips, we rhapsodized about old family recipes, communities that come together because of food but stay together because of much more. It was great! Henceforth, I'm going to spend Oliver's naptime today (please be a long one; the puking and up last night situation I think warrants me at least 75 minutes of quiet today) trying Adaption 1. It's surprisingly hard to find a good lemon sheet cake recipe- most are for lemon poundcakes, bundts or the like- and I don't want to go the Duncan Hines route that my grandma's old recipe calls for, although it's a solid box mix. So, I'll keep you posted on that. I was going to make a lovely King salmon-focused dinner tonight but I forgot that it's Back to School Night, so salmon will have to wait until tomorrow. Off to work in J's library- it is so darling to watch the kids, and J is still young enough that he will give me a kiss in front of everyone. :)

Random thought, dinner ideas

You might recall that I find The Bachelor to be an extremely depressing show which I have refused to watch since viewing one episode in 2005 or so. I gotta tell you that right there with it, in the depressing arena, is Toddlers and Tiaras. OMG- my stomach churns to see 4 year olds wearing more make-up that I did for my own wedding. I've not actually seen the show, but the still shots from it make me know it is definitely not worth my while, not least because I don't want to be supporting the industry. Dress up is one thing, but toddler pageantry is quite another. Back to food: for dinner tonight, I'm going to go Yotam as it's Meatless Monday. So, we'll be dining on Corn Cakes with Citrus Greens. As well, I clipped a recipe from the NYT Dining in recent months of a pan-roasted cauliflower with peas, ginger, cumin and such. I love roasted cauliflower so am eager to try this. O considered waking up after 25 minutes of nap but fortunately made the correct call in going back to sleep. He woke me up at 4:05a this morning and tried to convince me that it was time to get up and that we should go downstairs and play. I think not. He made it back to sleep for a bit but I only fitfully so. Blarg. After he wakes, we'll hit the market and then pick up Mr. J. Today was picture day at school and he suggested to me that in addition to the long-sleeved pink oxford button-down and seersucker shorts he insisted on wearing, he would also wear a gray, wool blazer. Uh, no. A) Monday is P.E. day, and B) it is the mid-80s in both temp and humidity today. He freaks out when his neck is hot; can y'all even imagine the wool blazer repercussions? I do love his fashion sense though.
