Oliver, leftovers, very ripe peaches

Oliver is once again his usual mischievous self, and it is with great relief that I write that. He's a little tired but is back to being a complete ham. Jack made him a darling card signed, of course, "Love, Officer Grossi", and because they were both champs yesterday, we had enormous ice cream cones before lunch. Cheers to health! At present, I feel rather gaga but am realllly enjoying leftover eggplant (just posted all the associated recipes for that dish) and the lovely smell of now extremely ripe peaches. Delicious. I'm going to can those this afternoon- probably as brandied peaches but maybe as jam. I haven't figured it out yet. And I need to get on the stick with my beets and carrots before they start to wilt.

We had another cool'ish morning today, and I started thinking, with happy anticipation, of the advent of fall when stews and tagines seem just right for instead of in spite of the weather. I'm sure I've told you about how something in me snaps with lower temps, and I start roasting vegetables with abandon. Note to nursing moms, don't eat a pound of roasted brussels sprouts in one day. Your baby will probably not react well, and if you avoid this, you will save yourself the embarrassing conversation with the lactation lady who was like, "well, of course he's puking if you ate that many brussels sprouts at lunch." Aah, it really didn't occur to me. First baby...

What a day, feeling grateful

We just got back from the ER- Oliver was in for about 5.5 hours with what we thought was appendicitis, an intussusception or gastroenteritis. Oliver was so good through the blood draw, IV port install, 60 minute ultrasound in the hottest room ever, etc; ultimately, it seems it might be a viral reaction in the lymph glands surrounding part of his small bowel. I cannot tell you how profoundly grateful I feel that he is OK. He was such a wonderful trooper through it all- nothing to eat, drink, a pee bag on, etc. Jack was fabulous too. O really perked up towards the end of our time at the hospital, and how did I really know he was OK? He felt me up in front of one of the docs- seriously! Full on boob fondling. I just looked at everyone and said, well, he's fine.

Gonna get my loves to bed and have a glass (large) of wine + take-out. Good lordy.

Jack makes puppets

Not only am I thrilled by the fact that Jack both started AND finished an art project, but also I love these puppets he made. We also, at his behest, just went out to lunch where he ordered a ham and cheese sandwich but told the waitress that as he did not like cheddar or Swiss, could he please instead have Gruyere. She was definitely amused. Before we left, I asked Jack if he could please wear something other than a police outfit today. Look what he chose- isn't he dapper?!  Yes, that is a glen plaid cap.

In a terrifying development, Oliver seems to be considering giving up his nap. He's screeching, "I have a fever, mommy, really." Puh-lease.
