Just a regular marathon

People, how is it almost August, and not one part of summer has felt lazy or slow (except the trip to the beach)? This has been a nutty, busy time. I have spent all morning filling out reams of paperwork required for Oliver's school, walking the dog, cleaning the war-zone that is my house and starting to pack for our trip to Louisiana this Saturday. The house does not look cleaner, the paperwork is still not done, I think I brushed my teeth but can't really remember, and I've got a migraine (and associated nausea) that is raging like an out-of-control forest fire. My fun-time afternoon activity involves taking the boys to the dentist at which time all three of us have appointments. Jack is always extremely well-behaved because he likes all the machinery there, and we love our dentist, but it seems very possible that Oliver will not cotton to the whole experience. I do believe that by the time we get home from this triple wow, we will all be sacked. And then dinner, bath and bedtime loom. AArgh! I had every intention of canning dilly beans this morning but need to go drop some of these many forms (and really, 1) haven't I filled all of these out sooo many times already, and 2) DC has the most absurd layout of each form- hard to decipher what should go where; how difficult is it to create a form?!) at the pediatrician's office. I must have some dessert today and am thinking citrus so hope to have time later to make a cake.

Hope you're all chugging along on this last day o' July!

Lochte, salad

This photo (and the NBC interview I saw) makes me want to shake this kid. Really? A grill? What an arrogant little bug. I want to say, "hey, Ryan Lochte's parents, are you kidding? Did you forget to teach this kid a lesson in humility and grace?!" Blech.

I'm tired and don't feel awesome tonight, so I'm out, but this salad is so pretty, yes? It's prettier than it tasted, unfortunately, but ah well, I came out strong in the kitch this morning with all that jam.

They slept, lovely latte, jam

Oliver slept for 12 hours and Jack for just over 12½. Who thinks they needed it?! Sometimes you just have to call it a day. T was doing a project so we just kind of grazed for dinner, and I sat outside reading the paper and enjoying some red wine. A looovely evening that also included some Olympics watching. The men's swimming is so exciting- what incredible athletes- and go US gymnastics gals!!!

Look at my morning joe! Isn't T's latte art getting skilled?!

Off to finish up my second batch of plum-basil jam.
