Dessert OD, shrimp rolls, solo din

After the cinnamon rolls, shortcakes and last few bites of cherry pie last night, it was with some feelings of "ugh" that I made chocolate cupcakes this morning for Jack to bring to camp as a slightly belated birthday celebration there. I was so happy to send them all out of my house and do not think I can look at sugar or butter again until I make his last cake on Saturday. Good lord on turning 6! T and I were pooped last night so enjoyed a very simple dinner of avomato salad (avocado + tomatoes, folks) and easy shrimp rolls. Shrimp rolls are so honking good. We had some leftover potato-bread hotdog buns which I toasted and slicked with butter. Then I stuffed sautéed spicy shrimp in them! Rock on!

I also successfully took out my stitches because I really didn't feel like going to the doc to have them removed today. Nice!

T is in NY for the day so tonight I'll be enjoying a veggie dinner solo. Ooh, child a'calling...

Cinnamon rolls! Hubby made it home! Jack is 6!

A lovely omelet does make a wonderful dinner when you want something satisfying, simple and quick. On this toast I spread the last of the recent cherry-plum jam that I'd not canned but instead saved for me. I enjoyed a cold glass of French (unoaked) Chard alongside. Delicious!

Afterwards, as you know, cinnamon roll making commenced. I should have known, but didn't until last night, that the recipe I use is a Molly Wizenberg one; she is just the best, really one of my foodie faves. Anyway, I love this dough because, like a good pasta dough, it's so pliable and strong but not sticky in the least. Although I cook so often, I'm still amazed and excited by the simplest of things, in this case the way liquids and solids can be mixed together to form something so perfectly of both.

And, voila! Hot from the oven and ready to be glazed. These are truly divine.

T managed to get home last night -such a great surprise!- or rather this morning at 1:30, and Jack has had a great birthday so far. At present, we're all building his new Lego space shuttle and rocket launch pad. Very cool. Legos are so well designed and neat!

Power back but no Internet/phones

Thank god for cell phones! Good grief! Our power returned this morning, and although the fridge purge was kinda nasty, it was nice to jettison a lot of the really old, "what is in that Tupperware" kind of stuff. Goodbye!I just finished making the magnificent dough for the cinnamon rolls Jack wants for his birthday tomorrow. It's rising now, and then I'll fill and roll it and let is rise overnight. Tomorrow, a bake and them a cream cheese glaze applied when they're just out of the oven. This recipe takes a while but is totally worth it! A fine way to start a birthday. T was in Chicago today and his flight back was delayed. I have largely lost the will to cook the shrimp I bought so might just have a nice egg sandwich and call it a day. I've got a hell of a migraine and did put away the entire jar of pickled pattypan squash (those I made last week) while making the cinnamon rolls...
