Y’all, I was struck nearly dumb yesterday when I came across Natural American Spirit’s (cigarette company) new stretch of a marketing strategy. They were advertising on a front and back spread in Vanity Fair their pride in being the “first cigarette made with organic tobacco” and in creating the related “earth-friendly growing programs.”
Now, I am all in favor of eradicating the use of pesticides and herbicides whenever and wherever possible, but to try and boost the use and image of a cancer-causing, lung-blackening killer by touting the company’s green spirit just seems like an act of hypocritical desperation. How many real environmentalists are smokers anyway? I don’t know, but my guess is that it’s not many. Why would we pollute our bodies but not the earth?
