What a satisfying dinner (despite my having charred the Gruyère toasts just a tad). I ate a huge bowl and am, unabashedly, heading to bed now as I'm sure the roosters will wake me quite early. Here's what I'll say about this soup. I definitely liked it and look forward to more tomorrow but did not find it speech-stopping. I also wondered what would have happened/might happen if I'd added half sherry-half port, rather than all port. And, do you recall the hysterical story I once relayed about the French cook/writer who banned all talking at his dinner parties? His soupe l'oignon remains the best I've ever had, so perhaps next week I'll make that again for an up-to-date comparison. Regardless, this was yummy, and I'm glad I tried it.
